Can you help us provide valuable support to London’s over-50 LGBTQ+ PoC/BAME people?

We are looking for women/AFAB people to volunteer to support our Melanin Vybz (MV) social group focused on LGBTQ+ people from BAME/PoC communities over the age of 50 focusing on our interests and issues.

We are building diverse team of volunteers from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities to help facilitate this unique network.

The key focus of this role is to assist the BAME/PoC Engagement Officer to engage with all our women and non-binary members of colour who are traditionally under-represented within the LGBTQ+ community. Liaising with these members about what they would like to see/do will be essential.

This could potentially include an informal but separate meetup and/or trips to places of interest across London as well as encouraging members to access our wider community engagement programme.

Additionally, you may also like to assist the BAME/PoC Engagement Officer with administrative support such as data entry, helping with emails and mailouts etc. depending on your availability, flexibility and skill-set.

As a part of the team, you will be able to develop your role in relation to the operational needs of the organisation, your own skills and aspirations and the needs of our members.

No previous experience or qualifications are necessary; knowledge or connection with LGBTQ+ PoC/BAME communities in London would be a plus, but a willingness to engage is just as good!

What you'll do:

  • Provide a warm welcome to all MV women members and initiate group discussion/activities
  • Ensure that our more isolated and/or vulnerable members feel included
  • Work alongside other volunteers (all of whom are people of colour)
  • Record details of attendees and keep a record on key themes and/or any issues
  • Provide general duties related to any in-person meetups
  • Raise the profile of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic/People of Colour communities using your own networks where you feel comfortable doing so; alternatively a willingness to develop such a network
  • Assist with the launching of any online meetups and managing the waiting room; responding to comments where appropriate
  • Carry out data entry onto our online Customer Relationship Management System (CRM) and keep spreadsheets up t date

     Benefits:

  • Supporting a community who are potentially vulnerable
  • Developing creativity and leadership skills
  • Developing a strong relationship with the older LGBTQ+ community
  • Meeting new people
  • Developing admin and comms skills
  • Enhanced employment prospects (references can be provided)
  • Increased Confidence
  • Full training and support from Opening Doors
